The USS Hawaii was designed to be the third of the Alaska-class battlecruisers. She was launched in 1945 but within a couple years production was cancelled due to budget cuts following World War II. The design was based upon the United States' needs for responding to Japan's "super cruisers," so the ships were constructed with larger guns and higher speed capabilities.
