The Type VIIC U-boat (Unterseeboot) was a fighting machine of the German Navy submarine fleet. 568 craft were launched between 1940 and 1945, starting with U-69. Type VIIC was in operational service early on in World War II. Between January and August 1942, German U-boats struck US Navy and merchant shipping in a phase of the war known as the “Second Happy Time” in the Atlantic off the east coast of North America, causing heavy losses.
