Description

The battleship Richelieu of the French Navy was launched on January 17, 1939. Due to the domestic situation after the German invasion, she sailed to Dakar in June 1940. But for political reasons, she exchanged fire with British warships there. She rejoined the Allied Forces in 1942 and received modifications at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in January 1943. The radar system and anti-aircraft guns were upgraded. Its 37mm and 13.2mm anti-air weapons were replaced by 40mm Bofors and 20mm Oerlikon. The modification was completed in August. She was then incorporated into the British mainland fleet. In January 1944, she coordinated with the fleet to participate in a military operation on the Norwegian coast. After being incorporated into the British Far East Fleet, she participated in the war against Japan. After World War II, the Richelieu returned to France.
