Description

After World War I, the large warships used by the German Navy to replace old warships were restricted to a displacement of less than 10,000 tons and a gun caliber less than 280mm. The construction of the Admiral Graf Spey cost 82,000,000 Reichsmark, and a large number of arc welding technology was used instead of riveting technology to greatly reduce the weight. Admiral Graf Spey was launched in 1934. She and her sister ships Grand Deutsche and Admiral Scheer were called pocket battleships by the British. She is also considered one of Germany's most famous warships. One year after she sank, her sister ship was reclassified as a heavy cruiser.
