Description
In 1954, Mil Design Bureau began developing a heavy transport helicopter. The heavy helicopter was supposed to carry 6 tons of cargo with a normal take-off weight, 8 tons with a reloading weight of 11.5 tons in the case of a short distance flight.
Mi-6 is the world's first serial production helicopter equipped with two turboshaft engines with a free turbine. Its layout scheme was further recognized as classic. The Mi-6 helicopter was the most cargo-carrying helicopter at that time.
The first flight took place on June 5, 1957. Serial production of the Mi-6 was deployed simultaneously at two enterprises, both in military and civilian versions: Moscow plant No. 23 and Rostov plant No. 168.
From 1959 to 1980, 926 Mi-6s were produced. In 1964-1978 it was exported.
